Snoring
& apnea treatment
Ill-effects of shock go VERY D-E-E-P!
Snoring, shock & Apnea treatment for sleeping.
Snoring and Apnea treatment
Continuous positive airway pressure (cpap) is standard for Apnea treatment in snoring. Positive airway pressure is
maintained mechanically via a cpap machine keeping the soft palate from causing obstructive sleep apnea .
Of course not all those snoring suffer apnea or need Apnea treatment.
The academy of Otolaryngology –Head and neck surgery, is another course often taken for those who are are snoring
AND often those who are morbidly obese as well surgically correcting the soft palate flaccidity in obstructive
sleep apnea.
Two types of treatment for snoring & apnea.
OSA or Obstructive sleep apnea, which is by far the most common & CSA- Central sleep apnea.
OSA is very simply caused by an obstruction in the airway often including tonsils and adenoids & sinus, etc
where the flow of air is ‘obstructed’.
However the much less frequently observed CSA is a central nervous system disorder that occurs when the brain
signal telling the body to breathe is delayed. Commonly Doctors observe this in conditions of diseases like Stroke,
Head injury, Tumor, infection or other respiratory disease. We shall limit most of our discussion with the former
condition of Obstructive apnea treatment.
Causes and risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea treatment
With obstructive sleep apnea your throat collapses during sleep, blocking the airway and prevents air getting to
the lungs but well toned throat muscles keep the throat and airway open.
* Being overweight or obese (though approx ½ of people with sleep apnea are not obese)
* Large tonsils or adenoids
* Distinctive physical attributes such as a deviated septum, shape of head and neck, receding chin, enlarged
tongue)
* Nasal congestion or blockage (from colds, sinus, allergies, smoking, etc.)
* Throat muscles and tongue relax more than normal during sleep (possibly due to alchohol or sedatives or age)
Dangers of Snoring in Apnea
-Oxygen debt is THE most common danger. This causes stress primarily on the heart &
Brain which can result in Stroke, High blood pressure or Heart diseases.
-Sleep debt or deprivation is also common which can result in various affective disorders such as moodiness,
anxiety, depression, eating disorders, etc. In fact as many as 1 in 5 of those suffering apnea also suffer
depression.
Further obstructive sleep apnea does seem to run in families which may be a result of anatomic abnormalities or
medical conditions expressed through the DNA.
Apnea treatment to help stop snoring.
Mild sleep apnea is responsive to self-help remedies. Indeed self help apnea treatments for snoring may help:
* Lose weight. As little as 10% of weight loss can reduce apnea and improve sleep quality.
* Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and sedatives, or anything that relaxes the muscles of the throat and encourages snoring
especially late in the day
* Sleep on your side. Sone special pillows or remedies that encourage side-sleeping, such as the “tennis ball
trick,” might help those who experience sleep apnea ONLY when they sleep on their back.
* Elevate the head of your bed 4 -6 inches. This can alleviate snoring and make breathing easier.
* Maintain regular sleep hours. Shift workers may find this difficult.
* Using a nasal dilator, ‘breathe right’ strips or even a saline nasal spray to open nasal passages helps.
* Various Jaw & other oral appliances have also been known to help.
